Everything you need to understand notarization, prepare your documents, and schedule your appointment with confidence.
If you already know what you need, you can book anytime.
Most notarizations go smoothly when these few things are prepared.
Before your appointment, please confirm:
• Each signer has a valid, unexpired government ID
• Your document is complete and ready to sign
• Do not sign the document ahead of time
• All required signers will be present
• Witnesses are arranged if your document requires them
If you're unsure about any of these items, you can still book — I’ll help you prepare before your appointment.
A notary public is a trusted witness appointed by the State of Alaska to help protect people from fraud and misunderstanding.
My role during a notarization is to ensure that each signature is:
• Properly identified
• Made willingly
• Completed correctly
During an appointment I will:
• Verify the signer’s identity
• Confirm the signer understands what they are signing
• Ensure the signer is signing voluntarily
• Complete the notarial certificate
• Record the notarization in a secure journal
Forget-Me-Not Notary provides:
Notarization confirms that a signature is authentic and made willingly.
Some common documents that may require notarization include:
• Power of Attorney (POA)
• Real estate documents (deeds, refinance, HELOC)
• Wills and sworn affidavits
• Travel authorization letters for minors
• Vehicle title transfers
• Medical or care planning documents
If you're unsure whether your document requires notarization, the organization or attorney who provided the document can usually confirm.
Once your document is ready, I can complete the notarization.
Identity verification protects both the signer and the document.
Each signer must present one valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID.
Acceptable ID for in-person notarizations typically includes:
• Driver’s license
• State ID
• U.S. passport
• Military ID
• Tribal ID with signature
The ID must be physical (not a photo on a phone).
If you are unsure whether your ID will work, feel free to contact me before scheduling.
Remote Online Notarization allows you to complete your notarization through a secure live video session.
During the session you will:
• Verify your identity through the platform’s security system
• Join a live video meeting with the notary
• Review and sign the document electronically
Identity verification works best with:
• U.S. driver’s license
• State ID
• U.S. passport
If you have a different type of ID, contact me first and I can confirm whether it will work with the verification system.
For the smoothest online appointment:
• Use a device with a camera and microphone
• Have a stable internet connection
• Be in a quiet, well-lit space
• Have your ID ready
• Enter your name and address exactly as it appears on your ID
Some tablets occasionally have trouble completing identity verification. A laptop or desktop often works best.
To complete a notarization, the document must be ready for signing.
Please make sure:
• The document is complete with no missing pages
• There are no blank spaces unless allowed by the receiving agency
• The document has not been signed ahead of time
You will sign the document during the appointment in front of the notary.
I can explain the notarization process and guide the signing steps, but I cannot choose forms, fill out documents, or provide legal advice.
To keep your appointment smooth and avoid delays, I review your document ahead of time.
After booking, you’ll receive simple instructions to send your document by text or email.
Please send all pages (even if they don’t require signatures) so I can:
• Confirm the notary wording is correct
• Ensure the document is complete
• Help prevent delays, re-dos, or rejected paperwork
If you’re unsure, just send what you have — I’ll guide you from there.
Some documents require witnesses in addition to a notary.
If witnesses are required:
• You must arrange them unless we discuss it in advance
• They must be present during the signing
• They must have valid identification if the document requires it
If you're unsure whether witnesses are needed, check the document instructions or the agency that provided the form.
Many families schedule notarizations for parents or loved ones.
To complete a notarization, the signer must be able to:
• Communicate directly with the notary
• Understand what they are signing
• Demonstrate willingness to sign
Helpful preparation for elder or hospice visits:
• Choose a calm, quiet time of day
• Have glasses or hearing aids available
• Limit distractions during signing
These steps help ensure the appointment is comfortable and successful.
